Double Critter Nation Cage Review for Chinchillas: I have two chinchillas who are both about 6 months old. When I got them, I paid around $80 at Petco for a cage that looked big in comparison to Petco’s other cages…but really it only had room for one hammock, food bowl, and an igloo. The chinchillas were very inactive – they slept all day, cuddling each other. I thought they just had low energy level. Even when I let them out to play, they didn’t run around that much. Fast forward to last week, I began researching for pet supplies and came across this Double Critter Nation Cage. It looked “too big” for my two little chinchillas, to be honest. But then I thought, who doesn’t like a bigger space to live in? This would be like upgrading the chinchillas to a mansion, Their old cage looks like a shoebox next to this cage.
I set this cage up with five hammocks, an igloo, a hideaway box, hanging chew toys, food bowls, and everything that the rats could ever need. I used old pillow cases to cover up all the plastic trays and plastic levels, to make them warm and cozy. On the bottom tray, I put a layer of paper pulp bedding (best for rodents…never use pine or wood shavings!), and their litter box. My chinchillas are litter trained, so they know not to go potty on any of the fabric parts of the cage. So far they have been making a great effort to go potty only in their litter box. No accidents. I am very proud of them.

How to Setup Double Critter Nation Cage?
This cage came with great instructions. Very detailed. I suggest buying a rubber mallet if you don’t have one as it helps make assembly much easier. I was able to do this all by myself in an hour and I’m terrible at this stuff. I highly recommend this cage for chinchillas or ferrets. It’s wonderful, big and easy access to hang things and makes cleaning easy. The price is great for what you get. If you want a deeper base you can either order one also made by critter nation or use a cement mixing bin from Home Depot. Thanks critter nation! Double Critter Nation Cage Review:
I’ve had this cage for about a year now. It’s a great product. It’s great amount of space for my 2 chinchillas. I had 2 other cages I wasted money on and I wish I have bought this first. Easy to read directions, fairly easy to put together, although some points I had to have a second person. Only flaws I have is the second story I have the doors that are not quite lined. One slightly higher than other but still locks perfectly no real issues. Second the plastic bases, it’s much harder clean. I used liners but the dust from dust bath and the urine that gets soaked up by the liners sticks to the plastic and eventually it gets pretty difficult. I know they sell metal bases you can switch to, they are pretty expensive but if you could afford them I’d switch them up. Great cage, great quality, perfect size, strong bars, definitely worth the money.
Pros:
- It is very customizable to your needs (you can buy extra pans and shelving units for inside the unit if you need them.
- It was easy to assemble ( would recommend a rubber mallet) took about an hour or less.
- Space, space, space. You can have two chinchillas, and this will be perfect. Or you can have 3 chinchillas, and there will still be plenty of space. If you are a serious chinchilla owner, and plan on having generations of chinchillas, get this cage ASAP so that all of your rats can enjoy their mansion 🙂
Cons:
some of the ‘connector’ pieces were bent when I received the package which made it harder to put together, Once put together, it looks perfect. Its depends on the delivery partners and their service.
Where to Buy Double Critter Nation Cage?
I got this for a great price on Amazon during a sale. It’s huge. Great for 2 chinchilla pets. I love that I can add an addition on top later. We also bought and additional shelf so we have 3 levels.

So really, there’s nothing to worry about with this cage. I thought it was a luxury when I bought it, but now I consider it essential to my chinchillas health and happiness. Please get this if you are a real owner who is in love with your chinchillas! 🙂
